DISQUS Comment System Will Jail Your Comments
Plugins August 25th, 2009
If you have your own domain and self hosted on a server, DISQUS Comment System will probably jail all your comments and you are unable to export back to your WordPress or Blogspot database. What they have provide to the users are just an option to export to XML file. The XML file is not recognize by WordPress or Blogspot which mean you can’t keep the comments to yourself anymore. The comments are slowly belongs to them because you don’t have control over the comments anymore. You have to continue rely on their commenting system.
Although, you can share the comments with other blogging platform such as TypePad but you still can’t get away from using DISQUS comment system. They implement such as clever tactics and yet useful techniques to keep blogger continue using their comment system. While this is not a big issue for blogger who are using free hosting platform such as blogger.com since the posts and comments are belongs to Google. They can removed your content at anytime also. I wouldn’t mind using DISQUS comment system on my blogspot account but not for my own domain and self hosted blog.
So, think carefully before its too late and giving out your existing valuable comments for free to them especially for blogs with more posts and comments. You are unable to synchronize back to WordPress comments. They mention that they will implement new features to export back to WordPress comments but it has been a year until now there is no new feature to export directly to WordPress or Blogspot. This is a bit frustrating.
I have disabled this plugin so far to save myself from future unavoidable events and I lost some comments by other users. I dunno what will happens to my comments if their server shutdown or suddenly disappear from the internet. The comments also did not automatically synchronize back to my WordPress comments which make me even more worried although they claim that it will automatically synchronize back when the page is view.
There are other similar comment plugin like this that I know. It is call “IntenseDebate” comment system. I don’t know how good this plugin compare to DISQUS. What I know is, it makes your blog stop loading and responding when the comments are being view. I wonder is it their server can’t handle such a huge bandwidth and comments.
Conclusion
Be careful when using comment plugin like this which will store the comments on their server instead of your own hosted blog. All your comments will by jail by DISQUS…
