Organize Categories With Meaningful Structure
Blogging Tips September 14th, 2009
Giving meaningful categories will likely to improve your blog readership. You can define popular categories such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogging Tips, WordPress, and Google. These categories are most talk and mention by everyone on internet. Structuring categories into meaningful and easy to understand terms will provide long term benefits to the author.
My blog has started with too general and not so easy to understand categories such as Image tips, Email Tips, Micro-Blogging(how many people know what is micro-blogging?), Downloads and so on. Re-organize categories to appropriate name will also ensure your blog look more professional than others.
Too much sub-categories are not a good idea since it looks even more confusing to readers except those sub-categories are popular term such as Windows, Mac and Linux. Trying to separate into even deeper sub-categories level will not create good impact and impression.
Remove unused or seldom used categories. These categories are going to become left out categories since it doesn’t provide any good posts under it. It simply mean lack of information on these seldom used categories.
You may think organizing categories is not as important as putting a Related Post plugins to improve readership. Whenever I visit a blog, I will always look for latest posts and interesting categories to make sure I am really getting the information I want based on the category title. You can start doing some research on a few blogs to get to know what categories are good for your blog. A good example would be visiting popular and influential blogs such as mashable.com, problogger.net and johnchow.com.
