SEO Essential Tips #2: Clean Up Unnecessary External Links

Worry about your blog value?

There are many ways to make sure your blog value didn’t drop. One of them is checking existing links that are broken or looks like a spam website. You can check your old articles from time to time for any unnecessary external links to other suspicious blog that are already down, not updated for more than a year, appear like MFA (made-for-adsense) website, and less updated blog. Your links to these types of websites will degrade your blog value over the years.

So, you should practice to clean up your external links for every few months or half years to make sure your links are always up to date. Broken links will also degrade your blog value. You can check for any broken links using Google Webmaster Tool where you can see search engine crawl error on certain pages.

Having some external links are good for your blog also. Don’t ever think that linking to other blogs will decrease your blog traffic or search engine ranking position. Linking to outside websites makes your blog look more natural but not too much.

Hope you find these tips useful :)

Thanks for the great info. I’ve just checked my old blog – and found the hole bunch of spammy messages. I think that’s the reason why my blog is not ranking good in yahoo.

thanks for the tip, I just had another Google
blog locked as suspicious / like a spam blog.
I post regular entries on my blogspot blogs
but I did not consider broken links to be
an issue.

I thought Linking to forums and blogs would increas intrinsic value. I guess I will have to do more do dilligence in the future maybe to check page rank first. And then change out old links periodically. Thanks for the tip

if you are linking to popular website like CNN, yahoo or google, that is good because you are linking out to good website and it is recommended by google search engine.

Any thoughts on what the actual outlink ratios should be? How many outbound links do you think are generally acceptable? Also, do you think this changes with the age of the blog?

thanks!

Anything that is not too over or too much is consider a good ratio :) domain age is one of the factor in SEO.
