How to Extend or Maximize iPhone 3GS Battery Life
Gadgets July 7th, 2010
We all know that iPhone users will carry along a charger together and charge it everyday. Without a charger, our iPhone will be in disaster and we will get panicked. I guess it is the same goes for other smartphone users. However, there are many ways you can extend battery life by tuning and turning off some features on the phone itself.
Turn Off Push Notification
Whenever you are not relying heavily on this push alert feature, you should turn it off to save battery life. Push notification is useful when you really want to get real time alerts on your phone such as game alert, task reminder, birthday reminder, and so on. By default, iPhone OS will automatically turn on for all the apps that require push notification. You can either turn it off by each apps or totally turn off the feature. Then, you will be able to save some battery life. Not much but at least it helps.
Turn Off 3G
3G is the most battery life draining feature in iPhone. It is not recommended to use 3G when you have access to Wireless Network. Use Wireless Network unless you have no choice and there is not WiFi coverage in your area. Turning on 3G will drain energy faster that you could ever imagine. It is convenient but it is also use a lot of battery life. So, use wisely and turn it off when you are not using internet access.
Turn Off WiFi
When you are not using internet access, turn off WiFi to extend battery life unless you want the apps to run consistently at the background process. It will decrease your battery life faster. But WiFi is better than 3G since it use much less battery life.
Turn Off Cellular Data
I am not sure whether this feature is workable for iOS 4.0. I try to turn it off and let it stay idle from midnight until morning. The battery life is still dropping even there is no apps using internet access since I have disable this feature. I wonder there is a bug in this feature.
Turn Off Location Service
Do you use GPS service? Turn it off if you are not using it. GPS app is also good at draining your iPhone battery life because it constantly sending your current location signal which requires more processing power and battery life.
Turn On Auto Lock
Auto lock screen is great because it could save battery life from unnecessary usage when we forget to lock the screen manually. It will consume energy when the screen is not locked. So, try to locked the screen whenever is possible although sometimes I find the auto lock is annoying.
Adjust the Phone Brightness
Lower down the brightness of the phone does help little but not much.
Turn Off Mail Features
If you can, don’t use the default mail accounts in iPhone as it has more features like push mail, fetch data automatically which use more of battery life.
