How to Create Photo Album on iPhone

Apple allows users to create new photo album on their iPhone device but you cannot add new photo album directly on the device itself. To create new album, you will first need to sync the photo album with your computer and do any changes from your computer. The next time you are doing the sync process, it will automatically create new photo album for you.

To create a new photo album on iPhone, it is very easy. Follow the steps below.

  1. Connect your iPhone with the cable to your computer.
  2. iTune software will prompt, select your device name.
  3. Navigate to “Photos” tab.
  4. Tick “Sync Photos From” and select the folder you want to sync with iPhone.
  5. Create a new folder at this path in your computer. Put some photos  in the folder.
  6. Now, sync with iPhone again.
  7. The new photos from your newly created album will be created on your iPhone device.
  8. Everytime you put photos inside this folder, it will auto sync over on your device.

To copy photos from your iPhone camera roll, you have to use manual way which is open the iPhone camera roll folder on your computer. Locate any photos and copy paste to your computer.

All well and good ….. but, this procedure only allows you to set up one new album on your iPhone and it will be called “Photo Library” regardless of what you name it on your computer. If you repeat the procedure with another album from your computer, it replaces the first one you synced and overwrites the photos.

Why have apple made this so difficult. All I want to do is to be able to organise my photos on my iPhone into sub folders or albums, a task that is so basic on every other camera phone in the world!!

Hi Andy,

Welcome to my blog! You don’t need to repeat all the steps to create 2nd album. After it has been sync, you just need to follow step 5 onwards. Hit the sync button and the new album name + photos will be sync to your iPhone.

I don’t understand why Apple makes it so difficult to create photo album also. Hope the new upcoming iOS will change the way it create album :)

I agree with Andy – you choose another folder, the photos in the first one disappear!
The album screen on the iPhone seems set up for multiple albums, but iTunes does not seem able to support that concept.

When I used the “sync” procedure described above to creat new albums on my iPhone 4 it worked as predicted but it caused my “Camera Roll” album to roll up into the top of the screen and become untouchable so I could not access it.

Hi Tony, may I know which iOS version you are using?

Tony M January 13, 2011 at 4:30 PM

Alvin I am using version 4.2.1 on a new iPhone 4.

Try to reboot your iPhone 4. As I am aware, this could be iOS 4.2.1 odd problem for some devices or it is conflicted with other apps.

Same thing happened to mine as well- caused camera roll to move up and I couldn’t touch it- I rebooted-and it worked! Thanks for the advice!

Alvin,
I have a question that I hope you can answer. I have a 3GS with 4.2.1. Ive done all the above but when I sync my phone, the albums displayed are the subfolders I created on my PC, Camera Roll, and Photo Library. Problem is that the Photo Library album includes a copy of all the pictures in the subfolders plus whatever photos I had under the main folder on my PC. Am I missing something? Thanks

Just check with u, i try to create diff album using sync function in itunes, but i realised that the same photo is repeating in “photo library” and the others albums i create in the folder i sync, will it take memory place in my iphone?

Can i just want it organised by the album i created and take off the photo library?

Apple needs to come out with an update to be able to create new albums from the device directly and set a lock on any one of them. is there at least an application that does just that for me to use in the mean time?

Hi Kevin,

You can try this iPhone app Photo+Folder. You need to import photos from Camera Roll into this app.

I seriously dont know why apple products bad in some departments and how people tolerate it for so long. How absurd to have to connect your SMARTPHONE to a computer (via another crappy program like iTunes) just to create a folder. Apple have serious control issues.

Problem solved. iOS 5 will have the ability to set up photo folders built in.

Can you make it possible without going onto iTunes, because I really can’t be bother standing turning on my computer and then waiting then going on iTunes then I have wait for all that sync stuff to happen.
All I’m saying now is, how do you make a album for photo on a iPhone without a computer?

Alvin Lim July 11, 2011 at 8:15 AM

Yes, why can’t we create albums on the iPhone.
When I shoot pics, it’s a lot at one time but not very often
I don’t sync a lot. I just wanna keep my pics separate

Hi Amanda. You need to click on your iPhone name in iTunes first. When you saw your iPhone appear on the screen, then the tab will show
