How to Enable Internet Tethering on iPhone 4, 3GS

Internet Tethering is very useful internet connection sharing features on iPhone especially when you don’t have Internet Broadband connection. I have been 4 days without broadband internet and it is very difficult for me to publish blog post on daily basis.

Internet Tethering on iPhone has become handy and help me at the time of without WiFi or broadband. My 3G DiGi subscription is good enough for me to surf Facebook, blogs, and publish new blog post by sharing the connection via USB.

Here is a guide on how to turn on internet tethering on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

Step 1: Open the system settings.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap on General.

Step 3: Navigate to Network section.

Step 4: Double check to make sure 3G and Cellular Data are turn on. Then, tap on Internet Tethering.

Step 5: You will see a screen such as below. Tap on the switch on/off button for Internet Tethering.

Step 6: Choose Internet sharing via USB or Bluetooth. For USB, wait a while until your computer finish installing the required drivers for the first time. For next time, you don’t need to wait anymore.

Step 7: As soon as you see a flashing bar on the top of your iPhone, the Internet Tethering has enable successfully.

Step 8: Enjoy web surfing on your computer/laptop using iPhone’s Internet connection.

Hi Lius. You don’t need to download anything. It is the system settings on iPhone. Try to find “General” tab

Hi Banyar. Some users reported Internet Tethering option is missing too. You can try this. Go to settings > general > reset > reset network settings. After that reboot your iPhone.

Jesse October 4, 2011 at 5:44 AM

Hey guys, I see the Personal Hotspot, but I cannot “click” on it because it seems to be loading or something – I see a circle of gray lines moving in a clockwise direction. This goes on forever. Why is this happening?

Reply

Alvin Lim October 4, 2011 at 8:50 AM

Hi Jesse. Please make sure you have the following requirements for Personal Hotspot.

  • Mac running Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later or a PC running Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.
  • iTunes 9.2 or later downloaded and installed on your computer.
  • Dock Connector to USB cable

If problem still persist, you can try to reboot your device or reset network settings.

Do you get charged by your network provider if you use Internet Tethering?

Reply

Alvin Lim October 4, 2011 at 11:27 PM

Yes. Internet Tethering requires network connection (3G/Edge) from your provider. It will be charge as the internet connection will be share with other devices or computer.

I am currently using th Maxis Unlimited data package for my iPhone 4. If I tether my iPhone to share with my iPad , will there be any other extra charges or it’s the rm98 I pay to maxis for my data plan every month.

Reply

Alvin Lim October 6, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Hi Susan. If you set your iPhone 4 as Personal Hotspot and the data plan is unlimited, there is no extra charge for your bill. Unless your data plan has a limit usage every month, extra charge will be calculated for additional data usage.

Hello, I will appreciate if you can tell me what could happen connection. I have the 3GS iPhone and recently I was able to connect it via bluetooth and recently it turned impossible to do. Everything is like if the connection is up but my browser and skype and everything else is not running…

Then I tried to configure the bluetooth in my computer (the new Mac Book Air where I was already using it) and it says that I have not a port to do so…

Thanks a lot for your insight

Marisol

Do you try to connect using your iPhone 3GS bluetooth to other devices? Or using Macbook Air with other devices? It might turn out that the bluetooth is not functioning properly.

Marisol fernandez October 7, 2011 at 10:31 PM

Thank you Alvin. I am trying with another Mac computer where it used to work fine, and it says “There was a problem connecting to your device. Make sure the device is on, in range, paired correctly, and services sucha as bluetooth tethering are set up properly”

I think all of this is OK, but it seems it is not and I do not know how to check…

Marisol fernandez October 7, 2011 at 10:37 PM

The thing that is not working is the pairing …I can not do this (sorry that this will be twice!)

Alvin Lim October 9, 2011 at 9:35 AM

Do you put your MacBook on sleep before this? Possible workaround would be reboot or restart the Bluetooth.

Lee Hudman October 10, 2011 at 5:01 AM

I have iPhone 3gs with v4.3.5 software on AT&T.
iTunes is v10 on a PC with Windows 7 Professional.
When I go on my phone to turn on tethering I go to:
settings/general/network/setup personal hotspot where I get a pop-up that says:
To enable personal hotspot on this account, contact AT&T at 611 or visit http://www.att.com/mywireless. Then three buttons: “Call”, “goto website” or “cancel”.
SO, it looks like AT&T has figured out a way to make it impossible to tether without them knowing it, i.e. being able to charge you $45 more a month – even though I’m on an UNLIMITED DATA PLAN ALREADY!!!

Reply

Alvin Lim October 10, 2011 at 8:48 AM

Hi Lee. You should make a complaint to them to know why they have this. Unlimited data plan should not have problem with personal hotspot.

Marisol fernandez October 11, 2011 at 12:10 AM

I do have also unlimited internet connection plan here in Mexico and I already have tried what you are recommending Alvin and …nothing happens. It still says that it can not pair my iPhone with my computer! even the symbol of the bluetooth in the upper right corner of the screen appears as connected and the blue row that says Internet tethering on the iPhone also appears. ¿¿¿???

I do not understand what happended

Thanks for all your comments

Now everything is like “working”, both devices say “connected”, but internet is not working. Then I went to System Prefs and then Bluetooth whre I can not set “Internet Sharing” because it says something like this (I am translating into english):

“It is not possible to begin Internet Sharing because there are not available ports with which share the connection. Choose another connection to share or activate another port using the network prefs panel”

And, I do not know how to do this

Thanks again

Marisol

For those who do not see “Internet Tethering” option in network settings.
This is what worked for me.

Under Network->Cellular Data Network I filled in APN info for Internet Tethering, at the very bottom. For t-mobile it was epc.tmobile.com. After that I waited about 2 minutes and went back to Network Settings. And the Internet Tethering switch was already added there.

Basically you need to have it setup before you can turn it on.

Regards.
