How to Unjailbreak iPhone, iPod and iPad

Many people ask this question before they jailbreak their device “Can I unjailbreak my iPhone after my device is jailbroken?”. The answer is Yes.

You can always restore back your jailbreak device to default Apple iOS. In the process, you will not lost data and the apps that you have bought from Apple except those jailbreak apps like Cydia, themes and tweaks. Unjailbreak your iPhone, iPod or iPad is easier than jailbreaking your device.

I think this will erase all data from the iPhone, first question for you, what iTunes version do you use?second, are this working on all iPhone model?(2G,3G,3GS,4)? Because i use iPhone 3G with firmware 3.1.3, are you sure 100% this action is will not erase all the data on my iPhone?

Hi Jonathan,

This method will erase all jailbreak apps that you have downloaded because iTunes cannot backup those apps. The safety way is to backup all the purchase apps, phone contacts, photos and videos into your computer.

Then restore it after unjailbreak process. By following these steps, you can always get back your backup data.

It is best to always backup data first before proceed. In iTunes, you will see many tabs like summary, info, photos, videos, contacts and etc. You need to make sure it is check and then click sync button. It will backup the data for you.

After that click restore button under “Summary” tab. It will install latest Apple iOS to your iPhone. This is same like “Restore to default factory settings” option. There is no problem if you have deleted Cydia before.

You mean the iTunes will install the newer iOS better than 3.1.3? That is iOS 4.2?

Hi Jonathan.

Yes. If you have downloaded iOS 4.2 using iTunes before, it will install iOS 4.2 for you.

But i Don’t have downloaded iOS 4.2 before, are the iTunes will have download the iOS 4.2 automatically after i click restore? Ok, i want speak last topic before this comment, you mean after i connect iPhone on my computer, step 1 that The iTunes do is “Backing up” right? Are that action is not back up all my data? Are I must click info tab and check all selection first before I restore?(mail, contact, calendar)? Ok, I’m sorry about my comment is too long, simply “A message popup will ask you to backup the data” like you say, what is the choice of backup data? Are there “Backup all my data” choice in the pop up message? Or I must select one per one choice in there?

If you do not download iOS 4.2 before, it will install the latest iOS you have downloaded earlier (iOS 3.13?).

For ultimate backup solution, it is best to select each of the choices (Mail, Contact, Photos) for safety. Then when the message “A message popup will ask you to backup the data” popup, it will backup your selected choices.

So select which one you want to backup at the tabs selection. Good luck :)

Hi James. Download iOS 4.3.3 manually and restore the firmware. Once finish, open safari and go to Jailbreakme.com Follow the instruction at here. This is a very simple step to jailbreak without pressing power or home button.

Hi Alvin. Ive got exactly the same as Daniel and NIQII. I’ve tried to restore my jail broken iPhone 3G over and over again and keep getting ‘error 1015′ from iTunes! I have firmware 4.2.1. Can you help as I just want to get rid of Cydia and unjailbreak my phone and go back to Apple?!

Reply

Alvin Lim January 26, 2012 at 10:19 PM

Hi Emma. You need to download TinyUmbrella tool to fix the recovery of error 1015

Reply

Emma January 27, 2012 at 12:54 AM

Thanks very much Alvin, I have downloaded TinyUmbrella (TU) but what do I now need to do with it and my iphone? When I opened TU up it came up with messages talking about ‘SHSH…’ and ‘baseband going back to original firmware…’ . I’m not sure what all this means?! I now know how to get my iphone into DFU mode, and out of recovery mode (using redsn0w) that it went into when I originally tried to restore my iphone from itunes, but I’m not sure what to do with TU to bypass the ‘error 1015′ code in itunes and make my iphone go back and be unjailbroken? Are you able to advise? Thanks so much!

You can use RedSn0w to get your iPhone out of recovery mode also. Both are working about the same thing. If Apple had stopped signing the iOS firmware, there is no way to restore back to old version but you can upgrade to newer version.

I am looking for what actions to avoid in order to not inadvertently unjailbreak my device (iPad 2, iOS 5).
